Red Hats flourish at the Wyndemere Senior Living Campus

"The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humor and elan, " said Sue Ellen Cooper, founder of the Society whose members flaunt bright red hats as a sign of their approach toward middle age.

Wyndemere resident Augustine Neuert suggested the society and a chapter of the national Red Hat Society was born at Wyndemere this year. Now, twenty-two Wyndemere residents have donned their red hats as WyndeDames.

"As women, we spent our lives pleasing our husbands and children," said Wyndemere resident Pam Piette, who was elected as Queen Mother of the WyndeDames. "The Red Hat Society gives us an opportunity to do something fun for ourselves and explore new avenues."

WyndeDames have a number of activities planned to embrace life from boat rides, tea parties and fashion shows to having "glamour" photos taken and hosting a pajama party.

Ladies at Westbridge Assisted Living have also taken up wearing the red hat, forming a club, right at Westbridge. The Westbridge Red Hat Society, comprised of 11 members, meets monthly, either sharing tea or interesting experiences and presentations. For example, one of their most recent meetings featured foot massages.

Red Hat Society founder Sue Ellen Cooper sums up the Society's approach to life, "Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next."
